Drilling large-diameter holes (for example, 200 mm) is a task that is rarely encountered, but it does come up in construction. Only a 200mm diamond core bit can handle such a non-standard size. Diamond core bits are the leaders in processing concrete, brick, and other building materials. It's worth taking a closer look at their performance and the equipment they are used with.

Equipment for Drilling with a 200mm Core Bit

Holes with a diameter of 200 mm and larger are made with diamond drilling machines, which come in several versions.

Diamond Drilling Machine with Coolant Supply

Drilling machines with water supply operate on a stand and require a constant flow of water. Water performs several important functions:

  • Cooling the machine's gearbox
  • Cooling the diamond segments
  • Removing slurry from the cutting zone

Wet operation requires special 200mm core bits designed for wet drilling. Their composition is optimally matched to this operating mode. Using dry core bits in wet mode can significantly shorten their service life.

Diamond Drilling Machine for Dry Drilling

For dry operation, there are diamond drilling machines for both stand-mounted and handheld use. Drilling with a 200mm core bit without a stand is practically impossible, as the operator's strength is not enough to make such a large hole (the exceptions are abrasive materials such as cellular concrete, aerated concrete, and brick). During dry drilling, both the machine's gearbox and the diamond segments heat up considerably, so this needs to be monitored. Dry drilling uses special concrete core bits with a composition adapted to this mode. Using wet drilling core bits in dry mode will cause the bit to stall and the 200mm core bit to completely lose its cutting ability.

Drilling Machines with Micro-Impact Mode

A diamond core bit must not be used in hammer mode (especially on rotary hammers), as this destroys the barrel of the bit. Micro-impact is a technology that does not damage the bit, since the impact amplitude is minimal. Despite the small amplitude, drilling with micro-impact outperforms regular drilling. Micro-impact drilling machines are available for both dry operation and operation with coolant supply.

Practical Tips for Working with a 200mm Core Bit

Working with large-diameter diamond core bits requires some skill. If you are just starting out, it's better to begin with smaller diameters to understand how the bit and drilling machine work and to learn about the problems that may arise during drilling. However, if you are faced with making a 200 mm hole, the following tips will help you do it quickly and efficiently.

Choosing Equipment

For working with a 200mm core bit, choose powerful equipment of at least 3 kW. Depending on the room where the hole is to be made, you can choose the type of cooling. If the room is already finished, it's better to use dry drilling with dust extraction to minimize contamination. If the work takes place in an unfinished room, wet drilling can be used, especially for hard and reinforced concrete.

Fixing the Stand

The stand must be securely fixed to the surface in which the hole will be drilled. Before drilling, check that there is no play between the stand and the base. During operation (especially with vibration), play may appear – in this case, tighten the stand to eliminate it.

Starting the Hole

The first contact of the diamond segments with the material should be made at reduced speed, preferably using a special template for centering the bit.

Drilling Through Metal in the Structure

If strong vibration and a significant slowdown occur during drilling, this indicates the presence of rebar or metal in the structure. If possible, reduce the spindle speed and switch off micro-impact (if it was on). Drilling through metal takes longer than drilling concrete, so don't try to speed up the process by increasing the feed pressure.

Water Supply

When working with a 200mm core bit with water cooling, make sure the water flow is sufficient to cool both the gearbox and the bit. Periodically check that the drilling machine housing is not overheating. An overheated housing is the first sign of insufficient cooling.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the maximum drilling depth with a 200 mm core bit?

The standard body length of a 200 mm core bit is 400 mm, but if that is not enough, special 300–500 mm extensions can be used. If you need to drill a hole deeper than 1000 mm, several extensions can be used.

What materials is the 200 mm core bit suitable for?

With a 200 mm core bit you can make a hole in any building material: brick, cellular concrete blocks, aerated concrete, cinder blocks, plaster, foundation blocks, reinforced concrete and hard hydraulic concrete.
