Diamond drill bits for angle grinders

If you are faced with the need to drill various kinds of holes in an existing renovation, or if you simply want to minimise the waste of dirt when drilling into tiles or porcelain tiles, you can use an angle grinder instead of a drill and screwdriver.

Hole drilling with an angle grinder does not require water, as diamond drill bits are used for this purpose and are designed to work in the dry.

In addition to the absence of wet mud, one of the advantages of drilling with this type of power tool is the high speed of processing porcelain stoneware of all strengths, as the diamond drill bit has a large number of cutting edges on the surface.

   Most angle grinders are suitable for this type of work, but there are 2 important parameters to consider when selecting one:

  • Horsepower of equipment. There are a large number of angle grinders on the market with outputs ranging from 0.5 kW to 1.8 kW. When drilling porcelain stoneware or ceramic tiles we may have to drill large holes, 100-120 mm in diameter. These drills are heavy and put a lot of strain on the grinder drive during operation, so the use of low-powered machines is not practical. As a minimum, you should have a medium power tool from 0.8 kW, but the best solution is a powerful drive from 1.2 kW.
  • Rpm adjustment. Different diameters of diamond drill bits require drilling at different revolutions, so it is very important that the angle grinder has a revolutions adjustment. If all holes are drilled at the same speed this will lead to a considerable reduction in the life of the diamond consumable. The manufacturer always specifies the recommended revolutions for different drill bit diameters.

Once again, we would like to point out that all diamond drill bits for angle grinders are only designed for dry-running, as the electrical safety rating of these machines does not allow them to be operated with coolant. It is worth noting that dry drilling generates a considerable amount of dust.

Sometimes we may encounter non-standard diameters during hole drilling. For example, we only have a 16 mm and 35 mm diamond drill bit and we need to make a hole 20 mm in diameter. In order to make a 20 mm hole, we have to drill a smaller tile immediately and then enlarge it with a special cutter "Contour Pro 25/10".

This cutter, which is also mounted on an angle grinder, has a high machining speed and a special deburring pattern that smoothes the edges of the enlarged hole. Thanks to it, holes from 10 mm can be enlarged. For enlarging large holes, there is the "Contour Pro 50" cutter (hyperlink to website). With this product it is possible to enlarge holes from 50 mm.

Both of these cutters have a very high machining speed, even on the toughest porcelain stonewares, as they have a high concentration of diamonds on their surface.
