In the course of any construction or renovation work, grinding almost always has to be performed—be it concrete, brick, or finishing coatings. This operation requires not only skills but also reliable equipment, since the load falls on both the operator and the machine itself. One of the most universal solutions for such tasks is the angle grinder equipped with a diamond grinding cups. Since working with hard construction materials seriously wears out the tool, the choice of the “angle grinder” should be approached as carefully as possible.

How to choose an angle grinder for grinding
The choice of angle grinder directly determines the speed, quality, and comfort of the work. An incorrectly selected tool can lead to excessive operator fatigue, accelerated wear of the accessories, and even damage to the angle grinder itself.

Size and type of angle grinder
Most often, for grinding construction materials, an angle grinder with a 125 mm disc is used. This is the optimal balance between maneuverability, weight, and performance. However, in some cases, craftsmen prefer larger models with a disc diameter of 150–230 mm while installing 125-millimeter cups on them. This approach makes it possible to obtain the power and torque of a large tool with a compact contact area.

Motor power
Power is a key parameter in grinding. A diamond cup wheel creates significant resistance, especially on hard materials (high-grade concrete, stone, porcelain stoneware). Insufficient power leads to RPM drop and motor overheating. For 125 mm cups, an angle grinder of 1.2–1.4 kW is recommended, and for prolonged heavy work — from 1.5 kW and above.

Power source
Although cordless angle grinders are developing and becoming ever more powerful, in grinding they still lag behind corded models. The reason is that grinding is a long process that requires stably high RPM, and batteries discharge quickly under such load. For regular and heavy work, it is better to choose corded angle grinders. Battery options are suitable only for spot tasks when mobility is important and there is no access to mains power.

RPM and linear speed
Grinding efficiency is directly related to the wheel’s rotational speed. The higher the RPM, the faster the material removal. For 125 mm diamond cups, 10,000–12,500 rpm is optimal. At the same time, some materials (for example, marble or soft limestone) require a more careful approach and a reduction in speed to avoid overheating and cracking.

Weight and ergonomics
Few people pay attention to the angle grinder’s weight when purchasing, but when grinding ceilings or vertical surfaces every extra 200–300 grams matters. A light and well-balanced machine reduces fatigue and allows longer work. Ergonomics are also important — a convenient body shape, rubberized pads, and an auxiliary handle with position adjustment.

Protection and cooling system
Grinding is a high-load process, so it is useful to choose an angle grinder with improved motor cooling, overload protection, and soft start. This will extend the tool’s service life and reduce the risk of failure.

The ideal angle grinder for grinding is a powerful corded model with 10,000–12,500 rpm, sufficient power reserve, convenient ergonomics, and good balance. But even the best tool will not reveal its potential without the correct diamond cup wheel selected for the specific material and type of work.

Main types of work in grinding
In construction, several of the most common operations can be distinguished:
Floor grinding. This can be processing a fresh screed, tile adhesive, or old durable concrete. The tool’s weight is partially borne by the surface, which reduces the operator’s load.
Removal of fins after formwork. Most often this refers to fresh concrete. Work can be performed in any planes — from floor to ceiling, so it is important to take the cup wheel’s weight into account when working at arm’s length.
Alignment of openings. Processing the edges of door, window, and elevator openings made of concrete or brick. In such cases, the cup wheel’s weight plays a special role in vertical or overhead grinding.
Removal of plaster and coatings. Light plaster is easy to process, but polymer and paint-and-varnish layers require cup wheels with coarse diamond.

Although concrete is most often ground, other materials are also encountered, which requires competent accessory selection.

How to select a diamond cup wheel for the material
When working with construction materials, it is important to consider two interrelated parameters: hardness and abrasiveness.
Hard (low-abrasive) materials — old concrete of grade M400 and above. Here the diamonds can become “glazed,” reducing the work speed. For such tasks, Grindex, Rotex, Raptor cup wheels are suitable.
Medium hardness — concrete M200–M400, brick, curb, paving stones. Pro Tech, Extra Max cup wheels are recommended.
Soft (highly abrasive) materials — plaster, fresh concrete, aerated concrete, screed, asphalt. Such surfaces wear the tool quickly, so it is better to use Beton, Beton Uni, Expert.
Surfaces with polymer or paint-and-varnish coating — a specialized cup wheel is required, capable of handling the dense and viscous structure of such layers. An excellent solution is the Green Point cup wheel. Its design includes 77 diamond segments, thanks to which the material literally “melts” under the working part, whether it is a self-leveling floor, strong concrete, or a wear-resistant coating. The lightweight steel body reduces the load on the angle grinder, increasing comfort during long work, and numerous ventilation holes provide effective dust extraction when using a protective shroud.

Why it is better to use lightweight cup wheels when working on vertical or overhead planes
Grinding walls and ceilings imposes special requirements on the tool and the operator. Unlike working on the floor, when the weight of the angle grinder and the cup wheel is partially borne by the surface being processed, in vertical and especially overhead grinding the entire weight of the equipment has to be held in the air. This creates several difficulties at once:
Physical load on the operator. The heavier the cup wheel, the faster the arms, shoulders, and back get tired. Fatigue reduces the precision of movements, which degrades processing quality and increases the risk of “bald spots” or irregularities.
Tool control. A light cup wheel is easier to control — it is easier to guide the tool along the desired trajectory, especially on the ceiling, where any hand shift changes the angle of attack.
Reduction of vibration load. A heavy cup wheel, when working in an unstable position, can cause strong kickback and vibration. A lightweight design reduces this effect, which positively affects comfort and safety.
Less wear on the angle grinder. When working in the air, the probability of impact loads increases (for example, when accidentally touching an edge or corner). A light cup wheel reduces the load on the bearings and gearbox, which extends the grinder’s service life.
Convenience during long work. Even a difference of 200–300 grams becomes noticeable if you hold the tool at arm’s length for 20–30 minutes.

That is why under such conditions lightweight cup wheel models — Grindex, Rotex, and Raptor — are optimal. They provide sufficient performance with less weight, which increases control, reduces fatigue, and allows longer work without loss of quality.
